Jack Hartung, one of the longest-tenured CFOs among public companies in the U.S., has announced his retirement. After joining the company in 2002, the company has named his successor, Adam Rymer, who will take over the role on January 1, 2025. Hartung and Rymer will work together from January until March 31, 2025.

Rymer and Hartung have worked together for nearly 16 years. Rymer has held seven positions at Chipotle, not counting his latest promotion. Starting as a compensation analyst in 2009, Rymer earned promotions through the FP&A ranks every two years until he became vice president of finance in early 2020.
With Rymer’s experience largely in FP&A, the company will delegate some of Hartung’s current responsibilities to another long-time employee, Jamie McConnell, who is currently vice president and controller. She will be promoted to chief accounting and administrative officer when Rymer takes over as CFO.
According to SEC filings, Hartung currently holds the position of chief administrative officer as well, so it’s likely McConnell’s position will include her current role of leading the accounting function along with some of Hartung’s administrative responsibilities. McConnell is approaching her sixth year with the company and was a former Deloitte auditor, working in numerous roles in M&A and controllership before joining Chipotle.

Hartung’s financial management of Chipotle has been objectively stellar. The company has soared during his tenure without accruing any debt, and has overcome multiple challenges under his stewardship, particularly surviving and growing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently, Hartung dealt with the departure of the company’s original CEO, implemented a 50-1 stock split and is currently navigating challenges around portion sizes and product consistency among consumers on social media.
He has also noted the company’s interest in implementing outside-the-box technology during his tenure, such as exploring the use of artificial intelligence in their store’s camera systems to monitor portioning and inventory, something he said the company currently does through a “manual process.”

"It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve as Chipotle's CFO and deliver on our purpose of cultivating a better world,” Hartung said in a statement. “I have been fortunate to work for such a great brand with amazing people, and I am proud of the significant impact we have made on elevating food culture, successfully driving our compelling growth strategy, and unlocking considerable shareholder value over the years.”
